Starting with one base station in San Francisco late in 2015, Sigfox USA was launched with the grandiose goal to build a carrier-grade national low power wide area IoT network across 3.2 million square miles of the U.S. market. Ambitious? Yes, it is.
Sigfox USA is the network operator for our parent company, which is a different model than most of the 53 countries where Sigfox’s low power wide area network is available. Sigfox typically partners with existing network operators, such as Thinxtra in Australia or Kyocera in Japan to deploy the Sigfox network. However, in the U.S., Sigfox made the strategic decision to establish an independent regional network operator to deploy and manage the network, and as such Sigfox USA was born!
The reason for creating a network operator in the U.S. was quite simple, it is the center of global commerce and is considered one of the leaders in IoT globally. In fact, spending in the United States is forecasted to total more than $194 billion in 2018 and an estimated $1.4 billion in venture capital was invested in U.S.-based IoT-focused startups last year (2017).
Setting the Foundation
Over the last three years, Sigfox USA has built a deep, multifaceted foundation created specifically to serve the unique needs of the U.S. market. The effort includes fostering regional partnerships, bringing market field-tested industrialized devices into the field, as well as educated and collaborating with the next generation of IoT innovators. All the while deploying the network at an unprecedented rate, which includes several milestone achievements:
- 30% U.S. population, across 150,000 square miles
- Coverage in 24 major metros and many other regional areas based on customer demand
- Coverage within 30 of the busiest U.S. airports
Like any new disruptive technology leader, we have experienced some bumps in the road. Much like other companies such as Uber, Airbnb, and Netflix who have transformed their industry, disruption is not without its challenges. This includes a range of tests from a variety of fronts, such as regulation, industry naysayers, price sensitivity, continued innovation, market education, and adoption – just to name a few.
We’ve listened to what U.S. market has told us, and we’ve been agile in the deployment of our network, adapting our service offerings, and growing our U.S. based ecosystem in response to the feedback we’ve received.
As we humbly revel in our accomplishments at Sigfox USA, we are excited to see in the near term how the foundation that we have built will enable companies in the U.S. market to track and monitor assets, streamline operations, address regulatory compliance and more, efficiently execute at a large scale, national level.
IoT is still coming together… ruggedized devices are slowly emerging, and companies are starting to dip their toe into the IoT water testing proof of concepts and building internal work rules to better adapt to IoT technology. Major stakeholders are educating themselves on the benefits of IoT and what they need to know to deploy a solution. While Sigfox USA was busy building a foundation for new and innovative IoT solutions, the U.S. market has been actively preparing for adoption.
There are early indicators that adoption at scale is on the near horizon for IoT and Sigfox USA has the right combination of technology, ecosystem partners, and solutions to meet the needs. If use cases are a barometer, let’s look at the promising signs that we are seeing in the U.S. market:
- Asset tracking within closed-loop environments and geographical areas, such as a hospital, shipping stations, or commercial farm, where we’re helping to reduce asset lost and create a new service offering for businesses.
- Streamline operations using smart sensors deployed smart spaces, such as theme parks and sports arena provide front of the house excellence for guests and efficiencies for ground personnel.
- Monitor remote assets through sensors installed on remote assets such as billboards, workers, even lobster pots provide status updates and a digitized approach to data collation that keeps remote assets secure, safe, and operational.
